Raid Challenges for the new Root of Nightmares Raid have finally come, and the first one, Illuminated Torment Challenge, is about the terrifying Tormentors. Here’s how to conquer it and get some shiny new loot. Illuminated Torment Challenge is the first of these Raid Challenges. This challenge is for Cataclysm, the first encounter, and centres around the terrifying Tormentors. To accomplish this challenge, you must be quick at both running and killing.

If you’re new to the game or don’t understand how Raid Challenges work, here’s a short rundown of everything you need to know. Once Raid Challenges are available, an optional challenge will be introduced to one encounter per week (beginning with the first encounter). These Raid Challenges frequently impose some kind of restriction or tricky requirement that must be met in order to be completed, giving extra loot and rewards if your fireteam is capable of doing so. Each Raid has an equal number of Raid Challenges as there are significant encounters in that Raid.

Root Nightmares has four Raid Challenges that correspond to the Raid’s main encounters: Cataclysm, Scission, Macrocosm, and Nezarec. The Raid Challenges are rotated weekly, beginning with encounter one and progressing to the next encounter at the start of each weekly restart. The additional loot is the primary reason to finish Raid Challenges. These provide an additional pinnacle reward or an additional opportunity at a God Roll in Normal Mode. In Master Mode, the prize is enhanced by the possibility of obtaining an Adept weapon.

There will be a large Light orb that appears like the Traveler surrounded by a bubble of light: shooting this orb will grant the Field of Light buff to any player within the bubble for 20 seconds. Runners will use this buff to activate the nodes needed to advance through the encounter. Field of Light is now required for more than just athletes.

How to Complete Illuminated Torment Challenge Destiny 2

The Illuminated Torment Challenge takes place in Cataclysm, the first fight in Root of Nightmares. This encounter exposes players to the Field of Light mechanic while also requiring them to defend themselves against waves of ads and Tormentors in order to stop Nezarec’s overwhelming hatred. To complete Illuminated Torment Challenge, you essentially perform the encounter as usual. Of course, there is one major caveat you cannot slay a Tormentor unless you have the Field of Light buff.

Tormentors spawn after you defeat a pair of shielded Psions in the Cataclysm encounter, and killing it adds 30 seconds to your timer. Normally, this would be handled by the add clear personnel while the runner (or runners) dealt with the Field of Light effect. The Raid Challenge, on the other hand, requires the Tormentor to be killed by someone with the Field of Light buff. For those who are unfamiliar with how Field of Light functions, this is a quick refresher.
